Arpeggio Overview
The Arpeggio tool visualizes the notes of a chord as playable shapes across the fretboard and allows you to study how chord tones are arranged in different positions. Arpeggio patterns can be shown in different pattern modes, helping you practice various fingering concepts such as 2-notes-per-string, 3-notes-per-string, or 4-notes-per-string patterns. These patterns are not only useful for learning the structure of chords but also for improvisation, soloing, and connecting chord tones across the fretboard.
Discover and practice arpeggios – the key to melodic flow and harmonic expression.
An arpeggio is a musical technique where the notes of a chord are played one after another rather than all at once. The word comes from the Italian “arpeggiare”, meaning “to play on a harp.” Arpeggios – sometimes called broken chords – allow even monophonic instruments to express chords and harmony. They’re an essential part of melodic phrasing, improvisation, and building rhythmic interest.
The smartChord Arpeggio tool shows you how the notes of a chord are distributed across the fretboard, helping you understand and visualize their structure. Whether you’re learning scales, soloing, or composing, smartChord’s Arpeggio tool is the perfect way to master fretboard navigation and finger placement.

Edit Scale Patterns in the Pattern Editor
The Arpeggio tool provide ready-to-use shapes that help you learn how arpeggios are organized across the fretboard. However, these patterns are not fixed — you can customize and extend them using the Pattern Editor.
If you want to adapt a pattern to your personal practice method, you can open the current arpeggio pattern in the Pattern Editor using the menu. There you can freely modify the pattern directly on the fretboard.
For example, you can:
- Add or remove notes from the pattern
- Focus on a smaller fretboard range
- Create variations of an existing pattern
- Design exercises for specific fingerings or positions
Simply open the pattern in the Pattern Editor, adjust the notes on the fretboard, and then create a new exercise or add the modified pattern to an existing exercise.
This allows you to start with the predefined arpeggio patterns and refine them to match your own learning goals and playing style.
