Set-List – Song Maintenance

Table of Contents

A song rarely lives in just one set list. The same ballad is in the wedding set, the open stage set and the campfire set, and sooner or later you ask yourself: where do I actually use this song? The Songbook answers that question and lets you add a song to several set lists, or remove it from them, in one go. Renaming and deleting songs keep your set lists intact too.

Where is a song used?

Open the Songbook, tap the folder icon, choose Library and then Data maintenance. In the property selector at the bottom left pick Set lists. Below every song you now see the set lists it is part of.

Data maintenance of the Songbook with the property 'Set lists': below every song the set lists which contain it
The property ‘Set lists’ shows for every song in which set lists it is used
  • A song which is in a set list more than once, for example as an encore, shows the number of occurrences: Campfire Night (2x).
  • A song which is in no set list at all shows a dash.
  • Tap the sort icon and sort by the property: the songs which are in no set list come first. That is the quickest way to find the songs you have never planned into a gig.
  • The search at the bottom right filters the list by song name, as usual in the Library.

Everything else on this screen works like in every other data maintenance property, see Data maintenance.

Add a song to set lists or remove it

Tick one or more songs and tap the Edit button (the pencil). A dialog lists all your set lists with a check box each. A checked set list already contains the song; the number of songs in each set list is shown underneath.

The 'Set lists' dialog: all set lists with a check box each, the checked ones contain the selected songs
Check a set list to add the songs, uncheck it to remove them
  • Check a set list and the selected songs are appended at its end.
  • Uncheck a set list and every occurrence of the selected songs is removed from it.
  • Set lists you do not touch stay exactly as they are.
  • Tap OK and the set lists are saved right away. A message tells you which set lists were changed. There is nothing to save afterwards, the Save button of the data maintenance is only for changes to the songs themselves.

With several songs selected, a set list is checked only if it contains all of them. Checking it adds just the songs which are still missing, so nothing gets duplicated. Unchecking a set list which contains only some of the selected songs removes those.

If you have no set list yet, the dialog cannot show anything. Create one in the Set list screen first.

The same dialog in the song screen and in the Library

You do not have to open the data maintenance to manage the set lists of a single song. In the song screen open the menu and choose Add song to set list. The same dialog appears, pre-checked with the set lists the song is already part of. So you see at a glance where the song is used and you can remove it from a set list right there, not only add it.

‘Add song to set list’ in the song screen opens the same dialog

In the Song Library the dialog is available for several songs at once: switch to multi select, tick the songs, tap the New button and choose Add songs to set list.

If you have no set list yet, smartChord asks for a name and creates a new set list with the selected songs instead of showing the dialog.

Deleting a song which is used in set lists

When you delete songs in the Song Library, smartChord checks whether they are used in set lists. If so, the delete question lists the set lists below each song and offers the option Remove from the set lists as well, which is switched on by default.

  • Leave the option on and the songs are removed from their set lists before they are deleted. Your set lists stay clean.
  • Switch it off and the entries stay in the set lists. They are marked as errors in the Set list screen, where you can replace them by another song. This is the right choice if you plan to restore the song later, as restoring it makes the entries work again.

Renaming a song

Set lists reference a song by its name. Whenever you rename a song, in the Song Library or via Rename in the song screen, smartChord renames it in all set lists too. No error entries, nothing to fix by hand.

Good to know

  • The dialog never adds a song a second time to a set list. If you want the same song twice, for example as an encore, add it in the Set list screen.
  • Songs added through the dialog go to the end of the set list. Reorder them in the Set list screen as usual.
  • If the set list is open in the Set list screen while you change it elsewhere, the new entries appear there as well; their key, tempo and duration are filled in the next time the set list is loaded.
