Frequently Asked Questions
Chord name
smartChord allows individualized tone names and symbols. You can define your personal preferences in the general settings. These settings affect all of the smartChord features.
The chord diagrams shows the notes according the settings. But you can change the setting "Diagram info" to 'Theory' so the notes are displayed according the musical theory.
The songbook shows the chord names according your 'Name settings' in ‘Tone names’ and ‘Symbol’ settings. The intention is go see always the same chord names independent to the source of your song texts. So you'll always get a C#, even if the original chord of the song is written as Db. But there is a songbook option to force the songbook to show the original chords. But keep in mind, that with this option activated, the transposing is deactivated!
We chose SO instead of the more common SOL because there is limited space to display note names on small displays. But SO is also a valid naming/abbreviation.
There is no known bug. In most cases the user forgot to mute the strings which are not part of the chord.

You can create your own chords. There is a menu item 'Add custom chord' in the 'Chords' screen. Alternatively, you could write us a mail and request a new chord type. We are happy to add missing chord types to smartChord if desired. Please send a link where the missing chord is described to info@smartChord.de.
Please go to the Chords screen and change the filter to Professional (funnel button beneath the table header 'Type'). This will reveal all chord types defined in smartChord.
If you still miss a chord, create your own 'custom chord' in the Chords screen or send a link where the missing chord is described to info@smartChord.de. We'll add it within one week.
smartChord knows a lot of chord types. Sometimes the overview gets lost. To attain an overview you may use the 'filter' functionality to reduce the chord types to the most common or your favorite ones.
By assessing your individual skill-level (basic, intermediate, expert) a corresponding set of settings will be made. E.g. showing all chords and fingerings (expert) or just simple and most common ones (basic).
Please be aware, switching the skill level has an impact on the chord settings, because with a change of the skill level you also change the depending settings, e.g. number and difficulty of displayed chords and fingerings.
We decided to build the chord diagrams in the horizontal, as the guitar neck is also in the horizontal. We think it is easier to understand. In smartChord there are a lot of small chord diagrams and fretboard views. And we think it would look strange if the fretboard is shown in the vertical. That's not a natural view. So we show both in the horizontal.
Circle of fifths
There is an option in the 'Circle of fifths' to simplify the chord names. If this simplified mode is activated, the circle of fifths shows the musical symbols according to your settings in 'General settings'-> 'Symbols' instead of the chords according to the music theory.
As the circle of fifths obeys the theory, it produces chords like 'G##'. The 'simplified mode' shows them as 'A' instead.
Device / System
Unfortunately, there is no version for the iPhone or iPad. iOS is on our to-do list, but with very low priority as it is so much more work and we are focusing on Android to make one of the best apps there.
Unfortunately there is no smartChord version for Mac or Windows. But you can run Android and thus smartChord on a PC. Please have a look at this page:
https://www.androidauthority.com/best-android-emulators-for-pc-655308/
Windows 11 supports Android apps, but you’re limited to using the Amazon Appstore. But with a little work, it’s possible to get the Google Play Store up and running on your Windows 11 PC.
With the Google Play Store running, you should be able to use smartChord with all your purchased features.
Please see this page for instructions:
https://www.howtogeek.com/765131/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-windows-11/
BTW, smartChord also works on a Chromebook.
Yes, you can use smartChord on a Fire phone. Since you purchased smartChord through Google, you’ll need to install Google Play on your Fire phone. Only Google has access to your purchase information.
Please see how to install Google Play on your Fire phone:
https://www.androidpolice.com/install-play-store-amazon-fire-tablet/
After you have installed Google Play on your Fire phone, please log into Google Play with the account you have bought. That's all.
smartChord and install it.
A purchased version of smartChord can be easily reinstalled or used on multiple devices. You don't have to pay twice. Just install it on your devices. It is important to use the same Google Play account with which you have bought smartChord. If it was an in-app payment, that's enough. If it was a separate s.mart app, just install it on your device. You can find your bought apps in the order history: https://play.google.com/store/account/orderhistory
You can check if everything is installed correctly:
'Info' -> 'Your products'.
Your purchased products are listed there.
Ear Trainer
Once created, a quiz can't be changed, just played. But you can create a new quiz using the 'Folder menu -> New' and configure the new quiz, including instrument, fret range, tuning and chords. The new quiz will default to the values of the last quiz used.
Fretboard Trainer
Once created, a quiz can't be changed, just played. But you can create a new quiz using the 'Folder menu -> New' and configure the new quiz, including instrument, fret range, tuning and chords. The new quiz will default to the values of the last quiz used.
General questions
Open the Table of Contents. Switch to the ‘multi select’ mode. Click the ‘Select all’ menu item. A toast shows the number of selected items.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to run all smartChord features without the Google services which are part of Google Play. Some feature depend on them. Also the payment and accounting is completely in Googles hand.

Moving to a new device is quite easy and done with a few steps.
When you configure a new device, it's important to use the same Google
Play Store account with which you have bought smartChord. Then you can
install smartChord on your new device. If you have bought a s.mart app,
you have to install it too. You can find your bought apps in the order
history: https://play.google.com/store/account/orderhistory
Normally the producer of your new device provides a tool to move the
data from the old device to the new device (e.g. ‘Smart switch’ from
Samsung). Also Google can do the job with the backup and restore feature.
But also smartChord has also different possibilities to move or
synchronize data.
The best way is to copy a backup file to the new device like described in our documentation:
https://smartchord.de/docs/general/backup-restore/
If this is not possible, you can use the synchronization feature:
https://smartchord.de/docs/general/synchronize/
We want to make smartChord the best and most popular music app worldwide. To achieve this great goal, we have to go new ways. We follow the concept of a huge toolbox where the tools are very well integrated into each other. We made smartChord the central app with all the functionality and all the data.
As not every user needs every functionality, we made smaller packages for various purposes. The packages are represented by our plugins - the s.mart apps like the s.mart Mandolin. The s.mart apps just unlock functionality - but they need smartChord.
Your benefits:
⭐ smartChord as the central app, contains every functionality and data
⭐ The UNLIMITED provides includes also future features and apps automatically. You'll never get asked to buy a new app or feature.
⭐ smartChord and thus every s.mart app is improved at least two times a month
⭐ The tools complement each other or build on each other
⭐ Uniform concept and user interface
⭐ Share the data between the tools
⭐ No need to update multiple apps
⭐ Very small memory footprint on your device
⭐ Early access to new features
⭐ Quick bug-fixes
You may hide features from the 'Home' screen using the menu popping up on a long-press. You can add all hidden features again by the 'Add tools' menu on the 'Home' screen.
You can update smartChord in the Google Play Store. There should be an 'Update' button if you follow this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.smartchord.droid
Please see also Googles help page for updating Android apps: https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/113412
smartChord does NOT need access to photos, videos, documents or to any personal information on your phone!
- The 'audio record' permission is essential for the tuner
- The 'vibrate' permission is needed to signal, that time is up (timer) or pitch is met (tuner)
- The 'wake lock' permission is needed to prevent sleep mode while the metronome is playing
- The 'external storage' permission is essential to import or export stored items like songs
- The 'network access' permission is needed for the internet search for songs (and maybe ads in the future)
-The 'location' permission is needed for using WiFiDirect. The 'Set list link' function, in turn, uses Wi-FiDirect to connect the band members' devices.
There is a possibility to withdraw permissions with Android 6 or higher. Please check: 'Info' -> 'Permissions' -> 'Permissions'
Use the 'Reorder' menu on the 'Home' screen to reorder or remove the tools on the home screen by drag'n'drop.
You can add hidden features by the 'Add tools' menu item on the 'Home' screen. You may also hide features from the 'Home' screen again using the menu poping up on a long-press.
The sound of the instrument is produced by your phone. Some phones have really bad sound. And no phone has really authentic sound, because it is produced by the phones MIDI producer.
There are color schemes which will help you to distinguish the notes of different degrees in chords, arpeggios, scales and the circle of fifths at a glance. You can switch the color scheme in the settings of the 'Home' screen.
Instrument/Tuning
Yes, smartChort supports Viola Caipira. But it is not an independent instrument at the moment. But there are 18 tunings for Viola Caipira added to instrument Viola.
When you change the instrument or the tuning in the settings, it affects all the features like Chords, Scales, Arpeggio, Tuner or Circle Of Fifths. But it does not affect all features. Some features like the Songbook, Chord progression or the Fretboard Trainer store the instrument and tuning when the item is created. So every song or chord progression refers to the instrument that was selected during their creation. The instrument name and tuning are saved with the item and they stick to the instrument and tuning. This means that you have the same tuning with the same chords and fingerings in a song, every time you open it. But you can change the tuning/instrument for a song or chord progression in the menu. Then the fingerings are changed too and the new tuning is stored in the item.
Songbook:
This means that the instrument and tuning is specific to a song in the Songbook. If you want to change the instrument and hence the tuning for a song, you have to do it in the Songbook with the menu 'Edit -> Change instrument' or 'Edit -> Change tuning'.
Fretboard Trainer:
If you create a new quiz in the Fretboard Trainer, you can select one of your favorite instruments, the tuning and the fret range and a lot more. But once a quiz is created, it isn't changeable. You can just play the quiz. This is because the results of a game shall be comparable. But you can create a new quiz using the button 'New' or the 'Folder menu -> New'. A 'Create quiz' screen comes up, where you can configure the new quiz, including the input and output modules, the instrument or a tuning. There is a new video that explains the fretboard trainer: https://youtu.be/qhAHvyRHiF0
The sound of the instrument is produced by your phone. Some phones have really bad sound. And no phone has really authentic sound, because it is produced by the phones MIDI producer.
Payment
There are a lot of payment methods listed on Googles support page. Also PayPal or Klarna are possible:
https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2651410
First, we can reassure you that our products have no expiration date. You can even install smartChord on as many devices as you want at no additional cost. You don't have to pay twice.
Unfortunately every purchase is attached to a Google account. So it is important that you use the same account with which you purchased smartChord. The Googles 'Play Services' are responsible for telling the apps, which products are bought by the user. If Googles 'Play Services' are not working correctly, the information that you have bought smartChord is missing.
Please check if you have logged into Google Play with the account you have bought smartChord. If you have bought a s.mart app, you have to install it too.
Please go to smartChord and check this:
"Info" -> "Your products". Your purchased products are listed there. What is listed there?
If your product is not listed, please click the button "Order history" and check your orders in Google Play.
If the product is still missing, please check your internet connection. Maybe it helps, to kill the Google Play app or reboot your phone. Sometimes it is even necessary to clear the data and cache of the Google Play app and then reboot again.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to run all smartChord features without the Google services which are part of Google Play. Some feature depend on them. Also the payment and accounting is completely in Googles hand.
Piano
The lowest and highest octaves are too low or too high for most smartphones and tablet. In this case, please select a medium octave or connect an external speaker.
Practice
The practice icon appears on the home screen, only if you have created at least one exercise. You can create exercises on the Arpeggio, Pattern and Scale screen.
If you have yourself removed the 'Practice' icon from the Home screen, you can restore it from the 'All Tools' screen which can be opened by the 'All Tools' menu on the home screen.

Set list
You can use the s.mart Songbook Online Viewer. This is the tool to sing with your audience and show them the lyrics. For more information see: http://www.smartchord.de/song
With smartChord, you can organize your songs like books or within set lists. See our documentation: https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/organize-songs/
The Songbook can handle plain text files. If you want to use PDF files, please use the "Set list" features. There you can add your songs, PDFs files or images of you sheet music with the '+' button.
Although we have support for PDF files and images in the Set List. But the focus and strength of smartChord is on ChordPro or normal text or TAB files.
Yes, the Set list and Songbook have support for Bluetooth and MIDI devices. You can use it to switch between the songs in the set list, scroll the songs, start and stop the scroller and players and send MIDI commands to the MIDI device: https://smartchord.de/docs/set-list/use-external-devices/
Songbook
You can edit your songs on your device. But there are much more comfortable ways. The two easiest ways are:
1. Use the s.mart Songbook Online Editor. There is a online edit mode, which allows you to edit your song comfortable in the browser of your computer.
https://www.smartchord.de/song/edit
For more information see our video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19JVc76ExkY
2. Synchronize your songs with your cloud e.g. GoogleDrive. During synchronization, the songs are stored as text files with the extension '.sccrd' in your cloud. You can access these song files via GoogleDrive from your PC and edit them with the text editor of your choice. With the next synchronization, the changes are imported into the songbook.
You can use the s.mart Songbook Online Viewer. This is the tool to sing with your audience and show them the lyrics. For more information see: http://www.smartchord.de/song
The 'Song' sync does ignore categories, as it is foreseen to sync songs with band mates and every band mate can have other categories. If we would add all categories of all other users, you would have probably too many of them. The other problem is the content of the categories. How could you get the items of new categories? There is just the selected item in the song. And what should happen if your band mate does have the same category, but more or other entries in his categories? Because of these unsolved questions, we decided to ignore categories in the 'Song' sync.
Imagine an "I can play this song" category. If we would sync the categories, your band mate would get it tagged "I can play this song", even if he can't play the song.
The same applies to favorites. Would you expect that your songs are tagged as favorite, just because your band mate loves this song? Favorites are in our opinion also personal settings and not meant to be shared.
The 'smartChord' sync is foreseen to sync the own devices and it also syncs the categories and favorites: https://youtu.be/OSqfxE42kUs
When option 'Show original chord names' is activated, transposing is disabled
When transposing, the original song (-text) is not changed, only the chords are transposed and the transposed chords are displayed. However, a ‘transpose’ directive (e.g. {x_sccrd_tr:2}) is added to the song text. So if you look at song in the editor or the smartChord Online Editor, you will see the song in its original key but with the ‘transpose’ directive. If you open the song with smartChord, it will appear transposed.
But there is a possibility to leave the song in transposed version and save it as it is visible. For a transposed song there is a menu item ‘Transpose -> Keep transposed’. It replaces the original text by the transposed text.
Fortunately it's possible, but unfortunately not intuitive. You have to create a custom chord for the different fingering and use this custom chord in the song where you want to have the different fingering. Please see:
https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/chords-and-fingerings/#fingerings
1. Create a custom chord for the different fingerings.
2. Add the name of the custom chord in the song
3. Replace the fingering by the one you'd like
Either website does not provide songs or lyrics as plain text or lyrics as plain text or the song text isn't distinguishable from the other text on that page. The songbook supports plain text and the ChordPro format (https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/song-text-format) but no videos or proprietary formats.
Is there at least a song text, ou can find a solution to get the song anyway in our documentation:
https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/get-new-songs/#song_not_detected
The songbook is empty because of license issues and the question: which songs should the songbook contain! Everybody would expect different songs.
The solution is the internet. There are excellent resources. smartChord finds your songs out there. Just use 'Folder' menu -> 'New' -> 'Internet search'. Save a song if you like it. Please see our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pjx7of4TpU
There is also an import functionality in the songbook. By the 'Folder menu' -> 'New' -> 'Import' you'll get to the 'Song import' screen. There you can import songs in form of text files or online via the browser on your PC. However, not PDF or Word files, just pure text files like .crd, .tab, .... Please see our video on how to import songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7L-p4UzZWo
You can also google for a song file collection and import them at once.
It's possible to synchronize your songs with your cloud (Google or DropBox). It allows to synchronize the songs between multiple Android devices or edit the songs text files conveniently from your desktop or notebook.
There are at least four ways to exchange songs between devices:
1. You can synchronize the content of smartChord between your devices. There is a menu item 'Synchronize' on the home screen. This is the most comfortable way.
2. You can synchronize your songs with your cloud (Google or DropBox). It allows to synchronize the songs between multiple Android devices. You can also take advantage of the possibility to edit the songs (these are just plain text files) conveniently on your desktop or notebook.
3. You can export your songs to single files. You can optionally edit these files and import them again on the same or another device.
4. You can share single songs or even multiple songs at once. This is possible in the songbook 'Table of content'. There is a 'Share' button.
With smartChord, you can organize your songs like books or within set lists. See our documentation: https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/organize-songs/
There is an import functionality in the ‘Table of Contents’ section of the Songbook. There you can import songs in the form of text files (also tabs or ChordPro) or import them via your browser.
However, you cannot import PDF or Word files, only plain text files such as .crd, .tab, etc. I would import PDFs and Word files online via your browser on your PC.
Please watch our video on importing: https://youtu.be/V7L-p4UzZWo
Here is the documentation: https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/import-songs/
This is the page for online import: http://www.smartchord.de/song/import/
If your songs are not in separate files or if they are in formats like PDFs or Word documents, rather than plain text files, you can import your songs via the browser of your computer.
Please see or documentation: https://smartchord.de/docs/songbook/import-songs/
The Songbook can handle plain text files. If you want to use PDF files, please use the "Set list" features. There you can add your songs, PDFs files or images of you sheet music with the '+' button.

smartChord allows individualized tone names and symbols.
Tuner
Sometimes another app is using the microphone and blocks the access to the microphone for other apps. Please close this app or if it is not clear which app blocks the microphone, close them all. If this does not help, reboot your phone.
In rare cases it has to do with the permissions. The 'audio record' permission is needed for the tuner. Maybe the permission has been revoked. There is
the possibility to withdraw permissions with Android 6 or higher. Please check: 'Info' -> 'Permissions' -> 'Permissions'
